Connectivity

This soundbar includes an HDMI ARC connection so that you can control the volume and mutes of your TV. However, it does not support some audio formats (like Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Atmos) that require HDMI ARC. 

Specifically, it lacks an HDMI input, so you cannot use it as a pass-through, so use an optical cable if your TV lacks an HDMI port. Despite losing volume and mute controls, there is a workaround – you can set the soundbar to respond to the TV remote.

There’s also an analog jack for streaming audio and a Bluetooth port to connect to a smartphone for wireless streaming. You can select from up to four sound sources using buttons on the top of the remote control, so you have easy access to them.

A small cavity surrounds the connection ports are enclosed in a small cavity. If cables are going to be run to them in order, you may need to adjust the order to prevent them from touching each other.

In addition to the USB port located behind the right-side end cap, the Cinema 600 also has an audio input that allows users to playback audio files from USB sticks and hard drives. My experience with this feature is limited.

Sound quality

Basically, with the Cinema 600, you get three speakers (left and right front channels, plus a center channel) as well as a subwoofer. If you want to hear better sound than what your TV produces, that’s a near-perfect setup. 

Through the center channel, you’ll still hear crystal-clear dialogue despite the great stereo separation.

The sound of low-end bass rumble should be astronomical with such a huge subwoofer.

Although the bass is turned up, the low-frequency effects are noticeably muted. My viewing wall has a center section and not a corner, which could explain why the sound is so good. Still, that shouldn’t matter too much. 

While there are still plenty of basses, it sounds like it’s coming from a sub that’s half the size of the one that ships with the Cinema 600.

The bar is also capable of virtual surround sound, which, in theory, widens the beams of sound coming from the bar to create the effect of 5.1 surround sound.

 The wide sound stage you get when using this mode is impressive, but it also strikes a balance between the midrange and high frequencies. As a result, the sound is flattened rather than made immersive.

Stereo frequency response is impressive on the Klipsch Cinema 600. As it has an extended low-bass, its audio profile is balanced, making it suitable for listening to many types of audio content.

 Sibilants such as S and T sounds may seem bright or piercing due to the overemphasis in the mid-treble.

Size of the soundbar

You should consider the soundbar’s size first. There are countless soundbars: they range from small to large: even bigger than a big-screen TV. Some soundbars are large enough to provide a bigger sound, while others are nothing more than long boxes.

Make sure your soundbar is the same width as your TV if you want it to match. The diagonal size differs from the length of a soundbar, so, for example, a 46-inch TV won’t fit a 46-inch speaker. You may find success with soundbars designed by the same manufacturer, but it’s not a guarantee.

 There are two main options that you have for matching them, either a) you can compare the screen size of the TV you have to the screen width of the model you plan to buy, or b) you can check the width of both models in the specification sections of the manufacturers before you buy.

What kind of connections do you want? (HDMI eARC, Optical)

There used to be a common optical connection between a speaker and a TV, but thanks to ARC (audio return channel) and even eARC HDMI, audio bars have been given a wide range of choices as far as connection types go. 

In this scenario, you connect all your home theater equipment directly to your TV; then, you connect the audio output of your TV to the soundbar. Using your TV remote, you can switch inputs. 

There is an optical audio output on most TVs these days, as well as HDMI ARC.

Most people tend to use TVs as switchers due to how easy they are to use. This configuration, however, has some drawbacks. First, your TV has a limited number of inputs. You can only connect three devices to a TV that only has three inputs.

Is Bluetooth or Wi-Fi music required?

One exception to the rule of extra features in soundbars is wireless streaming. Bluetooth or Wi-Fi are the two main forms of this. Play music on your soundbar from multiple sources, such as Spotify on your phone or iTunes on your computer, via wireless streaming.

Your smartphone or tablet can wirelessly stream audio through Bluetooth. Almost all smartphones and tablets have built-in Bluetooth, so it works with your device’s music and any music app (like Pandora or Spotify). 

Moreover, it’s platform-independent – on iOS, Android, and Windows, virtually every smartphone and tablet has built-in Bluetooth. A Bluetooth adapter made by Logitech or Belkin is available if your soundbar does not feature it. Most soundbars also feature Bluetooth, and many do not. 

Bluetooth cannot listen in multiple rooms as much as Wi-Fi can, but it can be controlled with Assistant and Alexa and played in multiple rooms. The two main “open” protocols are AirPlay and Chromecast. Various apps and manufacturers supply their solutions like Spotify Connect, Sonos, and Yamaha Music Cast.

The number of Atmos soundbars released over the past few years has increased dramatically, with prices finally falling below $500, though be careful as some only simulate Atmos. Make sure your speakers are height-adjustable. 

Compared with surround soundtracks, the number of titles offered by Netflix and other streaming services with Atmos soundtracks is small. A bit of future-proofing with an Atmos bar is worth considering, but it’s not essential.
